What to Do in Essaouira in One Day?

Ramparts and medina of Essaouira facing the Atlantic Ocean

Essaouira is perfectly doable in a single day if you follow the right route. A UNESCO-listed medina, wind-beaten ramparts, a lively fishing port, an endless beach: here is our hour-by-hour plan, tested and approved by our local team, to experience the essentials of the Pearl of the Atlantic in just one day.

9am โ€” Waking up facing the ocean

Start early with a Moroccan breakfast (msemen, honey-and-butter pancakes, mint tea) on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic. The morning light on the ramparts is perfect for photos, and the town is still quiet before the tour groups arrive.

10am โ€” Into the UNESCO medina

Walk through Bab Doukkala and dive into the maze of white-and-blue lanes of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. Wander the spice souks, the Berber carpet stalls and the thuya marquetry workshops โ€” thuya is the regionโ€™s emblematic wood. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to soak up the atmosphere without rushing.

12:30pm โ€” Lunch at the fishing port

Head to the artisanal port, one of the most authentic in Morocco. The stalls sell fish landed that very morning โ€” sardines, squid, sea bream โ€” grilled to order in front of you. This is THE must-do lunch in Essaouira: simple, fresh and inexpensive.

2pm โ€” Skala de la Ville, the historic ramparts

After lunch, climb up to the Skala de la Ville: these 18th-century Portuguese ramparts offer a spectacular ocean view and line up a row of bronze cannons made famous by Game of Thrones. It is also the best spot to photograph the medina and the waves crashing against the fortifications.

4pm โ€” Beach and watersports

Essaouira is nicknamed the โ€œWind Cityโ€ for good reason: its several kilometres of fine sand form a world-famous spot for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. With two hours to spare, a surf lesson or a horse ride on the sand are unmissable experiences. Not in a sporty mood? Simply walk barefoot along the waves.

7pm โ€” Sunset and dinner

End the day on Moulay Hassan square, the beating heart of the town, to watch the sunset with a mint tea. For dinner, choose a fish restaurant with a view of the ramparts or a riad serving refined Moroccan cuisine โ€” tagine, pastilla, Friday couscous.
