Visiting Sidi Kaouki from Essaouira

Wild coastline near Sidi Kaouki, south of Essaouira

25 km south of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is the most spectacular wild beach in the region: sand dunes, powerful wind, a traditional marabout perched on the cliff and a Berber atmosphere far from the crowds. Here is our complete guide to planning your visit.

How to get there

Three options: organised transport with Essaouira Experience (return trip + guide, the simplest and most economical in a group), the shared grand taxi from the bus station (around 30 MAD per person), or a private taxi booked in advance (around 200 MAD one way). Allow 25 to 30 minutes on a pleasant coastal road.

What to do there

Sidi Kaouki is a world-famous spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing thanks to winds even stronger than in Essaouira. Those after gentler thrills will enjoy a horse or camel ride along kilometres of empty sand, the walk up to the Sidi Kaouki marabout perched on the rocky point, or simply a lazy break far from the bustle of the medina.

Where to eat

Several small beach restaurants serve a traditional Berber lunch (tagine, salads, mint tea) almost with your feet in the sand. Organised day trips usually include this lunch in an all-inclusive package.

Best time to visit

The wind blows all year but peaks between April and October — perfect for kite and surf, cooler for swimming. For a calmer atmosphere and beautiful golden light, arrive late morning and leave just after sunset.
